Are household child protection gadgets worth it?

My sister and her 18-month-old toddler regularly come to?stay. We don't have children, and our?house is full of glass tables, sharp corners and unlockable cupboards. Are?corner protectors, stairgates etc worth it or a waste of money? How do we best protect them – and our stuff?
