It's a familiar sight on dressing-up days – little girls wearing their mothers' high heels, always several sizes too big. Now, however, they may not have to wait to grow into heeled shoes. The New York Times has reported that a trend for children's heels is on the up.
The article, published last week in the US paper, points to Suri Cruise as the poster girl for heels for kids. Style's favourite seven-year-old is particularly partial to a silver peeptoe pair. When it comes to celebrity offspring, we must also look to those who are still mastering the art of walking, let alone doing it in high heels. Jay Z and Beyonces daughter Blue Ivy, as well as Julia Restoin-Roitfeld's daughter Romy Nicole were sent baby high heels by fashion godfather Tom Ford.

This is one trend, however, that – for once – might not cross the pond. While sales of heels for children appear to be rising in the US – fashion shoes for kids are up by 9% and several heeled styles by the American brand Steve Madden sold out – they're pretty thin on the ground in the UK. Children's footwear standbys such as Clarks, John Lewis and Startrite have no heeled shoes for girls, while Marks & Spencer says its wedge styles account for just 0.8% of its autumn/winter children's footwear range.
This suggests that in the UK, there's still a whiff of controversy about children wearing grownup shoes before they are, indeed, grownup.
‧ Are little girls' heels a fashion accessory too far or just a bit of fun?
